In a one-room or two-room apartment where a large family lives, zoning often has to be done in order to create an individual space for each family member. Such a recently popular technique among designers as zoning has a practical basis and serves to highlight certain zones in one common room. There are many ways to divide the bedroom and living room area, in particular by finishing the floor, walls and ceiling.
The combined living room and bedroom is a relaxation area for the owners and a place for receiving guests. A work area or a children’s corner for creativity and games can also be added to this.
Zoning is produced in several ways , with the help of:
- already existing niches or creating new ones;
- installation of partitions, screens or racks;
- pieces of furniture (guest sofa, vases, decorative plants, aquariums, etc.);
- installation of sliding doors:
- textiles, Japanese curtains or classic curtains;
- interior design – highlighting with color, different materials, relief and height of walls, floor and ceiling.
Many of these ways to divide a combined bedroom with a living room can easily use all the functions of each zone. In this article, we will consider the last technique on this list – zoning of a combined bedroom-living room with the help of wall, floor and ceiling design.
The following decor options and their combination will be able to separate the bedroom from the living room within the same room:
- the color of the walls and textile decoration;
- shade and texture of the floor covering;
- decorative beams and ceiling moldings;
- height, relief, multi-level ceiling and floor;
- changing the geometry of the walls using plasterboard structures.
This kind of zoning can be an excellent solution if the use of partitions and other methods is impossible for some reason. For example, if you want to install a bed under the only window in the room.
The color of the walls
In this case, you should separate the combined living room and bedroom with a different color solution of the walls – at least contrasting wallpapers, companion wallpapers. The catalogs of well-known brands often offer wallpapers with the same pattern, but different color backgrounds or a combination of a stripe and, for example, a floral ornament in the same color scheme, which makes it possible to use a calm type of wallpaper as a basis and a bright one from the same collection as an insert. Beams, moldings, columns
Decorative columns made of polyurethane or other materials, located vertically between two different walls, will help to separate the bedroom from the living room.
But, if you use this type of finish, you will have to repeat it in ceiling plinths, moldings, arches. You can highlight rectangular color zones on the walls with the help of thin molding under the stucco, framing them in a frame, and thus creating a visual niche by highlighting it with a deep, rich color.
Multilevel
It is best to divide the sleeping area with a higher ceiling, installing plasterboard in the living room one or two levels below the main ceiling that remains above the bed. This way, the space, which is modest in size, will not “press”, and the area for receiving guests will stand out in an interesting way. Properly place the light on the ceiling and around the perimeter of the room, it can also be used to highlight zones.
The opposite, but more practical method is the installation of a podium with linen boxes under the bed. Thus, you will get a so-called alcove (an improvised mini-bedroom or a cozy corner for relaxing indoors). It is also possible, and vice versa, to allocate a rest area for guests – then the podium will serve as a place for loud parties, karaoke. In this case, it should be supplemented with convenient stairs.
Finishing materials
Another interesting zoning option is using different floor covering materials. For example, the sleeping area is most often covered with a carpet, while the living room is covered with a durable and hard surface, laminate or parquet board.
A similar solution is also suitable for walls. The living room is distinguished by plaster, and the rest area is distinguished by a “soft” option – by wallpaper or silk plaster.
It is especially important when combining a living room and a bedroom to remember that it is still one room, and it should be done in the same way. Such elements of interior decor as paintings, candlesticks, vases, etc. will help to adhere to one stylistic direction.
