The realities of life are such that often the living room plays the role of a bedroom at the same time. This situation is typical for a one-room apartment, or if a new family member appeared, and a new room, for obvious reasons, was not added. As a result, there is a need to combine the living room with the bedroom. It can be implemented in several ways. How to do it in the best way, and which option is better, we will consider now.
Solution 1. The bedroom inside the living room
The option of arranging the bedroom inside the living room is possible only if there is a large, spacious room. Otherwise, a lot of useful space is lost, and some difficulties with natural lighting may appear. If your conditions allow you to allocate part of the space for a mini-room, then you can start to figure out how to make a bedroom in the living room. After all, in this case, you actually get two separate rooms. The bedroom will be comfortably hidden behind walls and partitions, and no prying eyes will prevent you from seclusion.
Choose a “bedroom” corner in the living room. It should be sized to fit your double bed. You can also set aside another part of the space for a chest of drawers or to approach the bed from the side, but this is not necessary.
Now let’s start building the walls: there will be two of them. How partitions can act:
- closet;
- deaf stationary partitions;
- movable partitions, sliding partitions;
- dense textile curtain.
It is best to choose the best option on the spot, sorting through the options and materials for their manufacture. If the walls in the apartment are already covered with plasterboard or there is a suspended ceiling, then a stationary partition will be just right.
Mobile movable partitions are made of almost any building material, including PVC, decorated plexiglass or wooden slats. Zoning the living room and bedroom with a partition does not take away practically useful space, adding two more surfaces for decoration and placement of hanging furniture.
Another option is sliding partitions. The unique solution is borrowed from Eastern cultures. The separator between the parts of the room is a huge door, the entire width of the room, consisting of several sashes that slide along the guides.
A wardrobe will allow you to combine useful with even more useful. After all, why waste the space under the walls of both rooms, if it is better to allocate it for other more attractive things, and the wardrobe will not only divide the space of the room, but also allow you to group things in one place. The door can open both on one side and on both sides. Here you should already focus on the way of distribution of things that will be correlated with the living room or bedroom. One of the compartment closet niches in the form of a partition can be passable, forming a doorway. The ideal option is to completely hide the presence of a bedroom.
A dense textile curtain is well suited if the bedroom furniture can quickly be transformed into a living room environment. A variety of transforming furniture will help with this.
Solution 2. Conditional zoning
If there is not enough space, it is better to abandon massive partitions. Instead, you can use zoning by means of curtains, fabrics, shelves, furniture with slots and without solid closed niches. This solution provides for a fairly open combination of living room and bedroom. Consider this if you need a personal space for seclusion under your favorite blanket.
To divide the zones, just first divide the room into two parts, and put the furniture that belongs to the bedroom in the sleeping area, and the living room furniture only in the living room area, and in no case do not disturb this space.
Next, the variant of the partition is selected. Suitable for:
- various options of open racks;
- decorative panels of rattan or bamboo;
- clapboard shields;
- polymer decorative panels,
- perforated metal sheets.
In any case, the main task is to completely isolate the space of two rooms, and visually divide one room into two zones using a fairly material decorative partition.
The last two options for using ready-made perforated panels made of polymers or metal are in many respects a designer’s tool. On their plane, it is easy to place any type of decor, up to fresh flowers, with the possibility of freely shuffling and changing the topology of each element according to one’s own desire and mood. An approach that implements a changing interior of a combined bedroom and living room.
Arches are one of their options. They fit perfectly and are most easily implemented on the existing suspended ceiling or plasterboard-lined walls. It is noteworthy that the presence of an arch will not affect the filling of the useful space of the rooms, but will significantly add to the visual separation.
Solution 3. Zoning on the floor, walls, and ceiling
This option can be an addition to the previous one or a separate solution, how to divide the bedroom and living room area along the floor and walls, creating conventional boundaries. These are different colors, material or appearance of the finish. However, such zoning is somewhat difficult, since you need to correctly choose the color of the materials so that the general interior of the bedroom-living room is in the same color scheme. Also, both zones should be combined according to the style of the selected furniture.
In addition, you can separate the living room and bedroom by installing the same bed on a podium or by making a relief ceiling. It is enough to bring the border of the podium beyond the bed and perform it in an obviously marginal version, for example, to organize a plinth or a small rise along the perimeter with the presence of a shelf, the distance between the edge of the podium and the bed is not less than 15 cm.
Visual zoning of the room is a very large and diverse direction in interior design. In fact, in any style there are variations on the theme of visual division of the room, zoning by combining compatible but contrasting types of finishing, colors, etc.
Solution 4. Lifting, folding beds
In order not to worry at all about combining rooms, you can use various variations in terms of furniture selection. The ideal option is transformer furniture, especially for a small apartment.
- folding beds;
- combination of a sofa and a bed;
- bed and wardrobe;
- folding sofas and armchairs;
- designer furniture.
There is a huge variety of execution options, and it is impossible to list them all. Modern furniture and a wide range of accessories are able to combine several rooms in one simply by providing a separate set of tools and furniture elements for each specific case.
A raised bed can be transformed into a narrow wall-mounted bookcase or hide in a niche without making itself felt until it is necessary to transform the room into a bedroom. Folding sofas and armchairs are already known to a wide range of users.
Transformer folding tables are able to accommodate at least a dining table with chairs or a comfortable work table in a small coffee table. All this allows you to solve the problem of lack of space in the apartment, sometimes more efficiently and much more effectively than any other methods.
