Lamps, in the context of the general interior of the apartment, have long ceased to be just a source of light. At the moment, they are used as a full-fledged part of the decor, capable of transforming any room. Hanging lamps on cables have absorbed these qualities.
Lamps on cables are products widely represented on the market. They not only fulfill their direct duty to provide high-quality lighting, but also please the eye with their form and constructive solutions.
At the first stages of production, lamps on cables were a rather large and bulky structure that used ordinary incandescent lamps for lighting. It is clear that such structures consumed a large amount of electricity and heated up a lot during their work. Mostly, such lamps were used in large productions. They provided bright enough lighting, which ensured productive work and health safety of employees. After all, it is more difficult to work in weak and dim light and there is a risk of vision problems.
If we talk about the origins of the very idea of the production of such lamps, the roots go back to the middle of the last century, when the streets were illuminated by swinging lanterns. According to their design, lamps on cables also resemble garlands that decorate streets and houses on holidays, so there is no specific prototype.
Since the launch of mass production of such lamps, a lot has changed. First of all, the scope of their application in everyday life has expanded. Now they can be observed not only in production shops, but also in hospitals, bars and cafes.
Pros and cons of using in the interior
As with other lighting structures, pendant lights on cables have their advantages and disadvantages. Let’s consider them in more detail.
Advantages :
- Multifunctionality. The use of lamps on cables is possible in combination with other light sources, which results in high lighting indicators. In addition, the use of a cable as a holding mechanism allows you to place the lamps at any distance from the floor.
- Reliability. They are made of strong materials that are resistant to various influences on them. This circumstance favorably distinguishes it from fancy chandeliers with crystal canopies.
- Attractive appearance. The design of such lamps, at first glance, looks inconspicuous, but this is if you judge from the interior of the entire room. Their main advantage is that they do not overshadow or draw attention away from the overall design of the room, but only advantageously emphasize and complement the whole picture.
- Saving electricity. In a large room, for example, you can place several pendant lights that would divide the electricity consumption equally. If necessary, you can turn on only one lamp, which will significantly save costs.
- In production shops, this type of lighting allows to evenly illuminate the entire working area of the enterprise. For example, employees work on machines next to each other, creating a single row of workplaces. In this case, installing a cable lamp that illuminates each workplace will be a beneficial solution.
- High level of security. The use of cables in the construction of such lamps complies with all safety rules, first of all – the rules of electrical safety.
Undoubtedly, hanging lamps on cables have undeniable qualities and merits. However, it is hardly possible to call them completely flawless, because they also have their disadvantages.
Disadvantages :
- Quite high cost. This is probably the most common problem when buying many quality products. Rope lamps are made of high-quality materials, which also have a considerable cost. And the components are not cheap.
- The presence of high ceilings. It is absolutely clear that in a room where the ceilings will be standard, not exceeding 2.5 m, the use of pendant lights is impractical. They are inappropriate in such an interior and can become an elementary obstacle when moving around the room.
Ceilings should be approximately 3m high, which will provide enough space to install these lights.
- Design. By the way, this is both a plus and a minus. In some rooms, the use of a pendant lamp will be appropriate and justified, and in some it is better to avoid it, preferring more traditional options.
- Difficult installation. The large number of cables and strings provided for in the design imposes certain requirements for the installation and placement of lamps around the perimeter of the room.
Varieties
Hanging lamps on cables are divided into two categories:
- Industrial The most powerful, with not the most exquisite design, but emit a very bright light, which is necessary in the process of production work.
- Household They have a more presentable appearance, because in addition to lighting the room, they also perform an additional, aesthetic function in the interior.
Household lamps are usually used in kitchen areas with high ceilings, where they are most appropriate. At the same time, it is possible to combine them with other light sources in other rooms and premises.
Cable lamps, among other things, also differ in the method of attaching them to the ceiling space. There are two main methods:
- Vertical. They are attached directly to the ceiling with a cable. Here it is important to keep the distance between them – from 50 to 150 cm.

- Horizontal. First, the cable parallel to the ceiling is stretched, and the lamps themselves are already attached to it. The distance between them should be at least 50 cm.
Both methods have the right to life, because they cope with the main task of all lamps – to illuminate the room with high quality. Except, they are used in several different areas: vertical – in industrial productions and bars, and horizontal ones are more suitable for lighting residential premises.
Selection criteria
When choosing a hanging lamp on cables, you should pay attention to several points:
- Where exactly will they be located, that is, in which room.
- Environment: installation in a living room, in a bathroom or in an outdoor space. This affects the required degree of protection.
- Decide on the source of light radiation, that is, which lamps will be used – LED , incandescent, halogen, etc.
- Will it be the main and only light source, or will it be used in combination with others.
- The method of installing the lamp: horizontal or vertical.
If you want the light from the lamps to be more accentuated, then you should use horizontal technology, which will help achieve a kind of “soffit” effect.
Considerable attention should be paid to the manufacturers of such lamps, to check the information about them, since it is now all publicly available. It is important to understand that only a proven manufacturer will be able to give a quality guarantee not only for the lamps themselves, but also for various components, fasteners, etc.
At the moment, especially in Western countries, this method of lighting is one of the most relevant. This is achieved due to the versatility of such lamps, which can be used in various areas, both industrial and domestic.
